Ten rules for proper contact lens use

Ten rules for proper contact lens use

What are contact lenses?

Contact lenses make it possible to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and, if they are multifocal, even presbyopia. They are generally made of a soft material, which provides excellent comfort for the patient when wearing them. They are undoubtedly a great help for those who do not want to wear glasses all day. However, contact lenses are not a toy, and the patient must take great care with them. The consequences of improper contact lens use can be devastating for the eyes.

Why do you need to be careful with contact lenses?

Wearing them for many hours a day can cause discomfort, red eye, and a foreign body sensation. If this problem becomes chronic, it can reduce contact lens tolerance and lead to the patient having to stop wearing them for a period of time until the eye is no longer inflamed and returns to normal.

Improper contact lens use can also cause corneal infections. The cornea is the eye’s first natural lens, and in order to see properly it must be transparent so that light and images from outside reach the retina correctly. Corneal infections are a real threat to anyone’s vision and can vary in severity. If the infections are in the peripheral cornea, they may have no visual consequences, but if they are in the centre of the cornea, they will leave a scar that will require surgical treatment to resolve. In cases of very severe infections, the microorganism causing the infection could even enter the inside of the eye and cause one of the most serious complications in ophthalmology, known as endophthalmitis.

Why is it important to have contact lenses fitted by an ophthalmologist?

At Clínica García de Oteyza, we have been fitting contact lenses for more than 25 years, with a high level of patient satisfaction. The importance of having contact lenses fitted by an ophthalmologist is that, in addition to explaining all the advantages and, above all, the possible problems associated with contact lenses, we also take care of resolving any complications should they arise. Therefore, we do not recommend buying contact lenses online or from opticians, as they will not be able to resolve any serious problem. In addition, at Clínica García de Oteyza we devote a great deal of time to teaching our patients how to put in and remove contact lenses, a relatively complex task if they have never used them before. Finally, we place strong emphasis on the ten rules for proper contact lens use to minimise the risk of infections or other complications as much as possible.

Ten rules for proper contact lens use

1. Do not use contact lenses without proper instruction on how to put them in and take them out.

Many people, for costume parties, use coloured contact lenses or lenses with oddly shaped pupils for the first time, buying them from any shop. The problem usually occurs when removing the lenses, when there is a high risk of damaging the cornea.

2. Do not use contact lenses for longer than 8–10 hours.

Contact lenses are often used as a substitute for glasses for aesthetic reasons. For this reason, we recommend that when you are at home, you remove them to allow the eye to rest and thus avoid a loss of tolerance in the future.

3. Do not fall asleep with contact lenses in.

If someone forgets to remove their contact lenses overnight, they can dry out and stick to the cornea, which can cause significant pain upon waking. They are generally much more difficult to remove.

4. Never shower, bathe, swim in a pool, or go into the sea with contact lenses in.

Tap water, pool water, and seawater are neither clean nor sterile. They contain multiple microorganisms that can adhere to contact lenses and come into contact with the cornea, causing infectious keratitis, which can be very serious.

5. Check that there are no tears and that the contact lenses are not inside out before putting them in.

Contact lenses are made of a soft material that can tear at any time. Putting in contact lenses with a torn edge can cause abrasions to both the cornea and the conjunctiva, leading to significant discomfort and even pain for the patient.

6. Clean contact lenses every day with the appropriate solution.

Just as you should not bathe with contact lenses in, you should also not clean contact lenses with tap water. There are many brands of solutions intended exclusively for cleaning contact lenses.

7. Replace the contact lens case frequently.

The case is where the contact lenses rest when the patient is not wearing them. It is a place that must be kept especially clean to prevent any microorganism from sticking to the lens.

8. Use artificial tears while wearing contact lenses.

Contact lenses sit on the eye, preventing it from lubricating normally. Prolonged contact lens use without proper lubrication can cause dry eye symptoms.

9. Replace contact lenses when they reach the established replacement period.

There are contact lenses on the market designed for daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly use. Under no circumstances should you wear contact lenses longer than the established period, to avoid using deteriorated lenses.

10. If you have any doubts or problems, see an ophthalmologist.

We would like to remind you that the only healthcare professional qualified to detect, diagnose, and treat any eye-related problem is an ophthalmologist. If you have any problem with your contact lenses, you should not see any specialist other than an ophthalmologist to address it.

If you are considering using contact lenses, we would like to offer you our experience in fitting and follow-up care. At Clínica García de Oteyza, we have a highly trained team to fit contact lenses, and we will take the time to explain the ten rules you have just read so that you can enjoy wearing contact lenses while keeping the risk to your eyes to a minimum.

When Should Cataract Surgery Be Performed and What Is the Postoperative Period Like?

When Should Cataract Surgery Be Performed and What Is the Postoperative Period Like?

Cataracts are opacities of the eye’s lens and typically develop from 60 years of age onward, causing a gradual and progressive loss of vision. Today, they remain the leading cause of vision loss worldwide. There are effective and extremely safe treatments for them, but when should cataract surgery be performed and what is the postoperative period like?

When Should Cataract Surgery Be Performed?

Cataracts cannot be prevented, but they can be safely operated on. At our ophthalmology clinic García de Oteyza in Barcelona, we have ophthalmologists with extensive experience in cataract surgery. They evaluate and monitor each case to determine the optimal time to perform this procedure.

Cataracts can begin to appear from 55-60 years of age and normally do not affect vision capacity in their initial stage. Therefore, in these early stages and if the individual’s vision is not yet affected, cataract surgery will not be performed. Nevertheless, regular consultations should be scheduled to monitor their progression.

Until recently, ophthalmologists recommended performing cataract surgery when they were fully formed, because the technique used previously required this. With current techniques, which are less invasive, it is recommended to operate on the cataract when it begins to cause some type of symptom such as a decrease in visual acuity, significant light sensitivity (photophobia), or a significant decrease in color perception.

There Are Different Types of Cataracts

  • Senile type (from natural aging) that normally affect the lens nucleus (nuclear cataract).
  • Congenital type. These are not common and are present from birth.
  • Subcapsular cataracts. These normally affect the posterior part of the lens. This type of cataract can develop earlier in people with diabetes, as well as in people who have taken medications such as corticosteroids.
  • Another type of cataract is the cortical type. This is characterized by white opacities that begin in the peripheral part of the lens, extending toward the central part in a radial pattern (lens cortex).

The Postoperative Period of Cataract Surgery

Both surgical time and the postoperative period have been considerably reduced in recent years. Currently, it is an outpatient procedure with a quick postoperative period. Cataract surgery is performed on different days for each eye, allowing time for rest and recovery.

Cataract surgery is performed in 15-20 minutes without the need for hospitalization. During the procedure, at the García de Oteyza Clinic, we can implant from a monofocal lens to a state-of-the-art multifocal intraocular lens, with which refractive problems the patient may have such as myopia, astigmatism, or hyperopia and presbyopia or presbyopia can be corrected simultaneously, avoiding the use of glasses in most situations and significantly improving visual acuity and quality of life.

Recovery time is brief and the patient only needs to avoid certain physical exertion for a specified period. The ophthalmologist will also prescribe specific eye drops.

Do you know what daily care your eyes need?

Do you know what daily care your eyes need?

The eyes are one of the most delicate and sensitive parts of our body and, as such, require greater attention. Even today, there are still people who do not devote the necessary time to them. For this reason, in this article we would like to show you what daily care your eyes need, as well as everyone else’s.

What daily care do your eyes need?

There are a few things you should keep in mind to care for your eyes. These are some of the daily tips that should be followed as far as possible:

Eye hygiene and cleaning

One of the daily care measures your eyes need is cleaning. Part of this happens naturally thanks to tears. However, there are many times when we have minor issues that require the use of specific products for proper eye hygiene. These include saline solution and artificial tears. Both saline and tears help with eye cleaning, and are two compatible and harmless solutions for our eyes.

If you do not have dry eye or other inflammatory problems in the eyes or eyelids, carefully cleaning the outer area of the eye with water or saline may be sufficient. In any case, you should always avoid rubbing the area and clean it daily as carefully as possible.

Artificial tears are recommended if you notice some dryness and/or irritation, but they are not a substitute for other treatments your ophthalmologist may prescribe.

For people with inflammation along the eyelid margins (blepharitis) or in cases of conjunctivitis, the use of sterile ophthalmic wipes will be essential.

Wear sunglasses with UV protection

The sun is not only harmful to our skin. The eyes are another area that is very sensitive to sunlight. With this in mind, it is important to properly protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. The most effective way is to wear glasses with certified filter lenses when you are outdoors, taking extra care on sunny days. Children can wear sunglasses, although we prefer caps with a visor, which help reduce harmful rays in the eye area.

Limit screen use

Surrounded by a world full of computer screens, televisions, and mobile devices, we must keep in mind that using them for long periods is not good for your eyesight. Screen use should be done with caution, allowing your eyes to rest from time to time. In addition, screen use causes dry eye due to reduced blinking when we are focused on them; this is known as computer vision syndrome.

When screen use is unavoidable for several hours a day, artificial tears can help maintain proper lubrication for the eyes. It is also highly recommended to take breaks from screens every few hours. This is another daily care measure your eyes need to keep in mind.

Nutrition to care for your eyes

There are some vitamins and minerals that help care for our eyes. You can find them in foods such as nuts, vegetables and greens, fruit, fish, or seafood. Vitamin and mineral supplements in capsules can help maintain optimal levels. Some of the best known include:

  • Vitamins A, C and E
  • Omega 3
  • Minerals: Zinc, Selenium

Protect your eyes during exercise

Exercise is beneficial for many parts of our body, but you should take maximum precautions. Data indicate that one quarter of eye injuries occur during sports activities. Knowing how to protect your eyes when playing sports is very important. For example, you can wear sports glasses specially designed with durable materials.

If you do indoor sports, where the use of heating and/or air conditioning is greater, artificial tears will help counteract dryness. Wearing swimming goggles in the water will protect you from chemicals such as chlorine, salts, and other compounds. In this way, we avoid eye irritation and other possible problems and conditions.

Be cautious when touching your eyes

The eyes should be treated gently. Rubbing your eyes or touching them roughly is not only bad from a hygiene standpoint, but it can also cause problems such as keratoconus. You should never rub your eyes with your hands.

Proper lighting

The lighting around us is an important factor to consider in the daily care your eyes need. Being in the dark and, above all, using mobile devices or screens at the same time causes us to strain our eyes. Keeping this in mind costs nothing, and your eyesight will thank you for it.

If you do, stop smoking

We know that tobacco is very harmful to health. Tobacco smoke contains carcinogenic agents that affect our lungs and other organs in our body. At the same time, tobacco damages our eyes, causing issues such as irritation and dry eye (dry eye disease), macular degeneration, cataracts, among others…

Do not rely on natural remedies

Being informed is essential; in this case, you are doing so to learn about the daily care your eyes need. However, we must also bear in mind that the information available to us that does not have medical backing may be incorrect. This is the case with pages featuring home remedies for curing problems. For this reason, you should not rely on natural remedies without a doctor’s approval. They can cause more serious and irreversible problems.

Regular eye examinations

Eye check-ups with an ophthalmologist are recommended every 1 to 2 years for people with no apparent problems who do not wear glasses or contact lenses. Thanks to these check-up visits, potential more serious problems can be detected, prevented, and even avoided.
